When a Sneeze is More Than a Sneeze

A 6-year-old neutered male Dachshund presented to Vetco Total Care in Bastrop, Texas, with a history of persistent sneezing. While in the exam room, the patient experienced an episode of bloody sneezing, prompting the team to investigate further. What initially appeared to be a respiratory concern ultimately led to an unexpected diagnosis and a successful outcome.

On physical examination, Dr. Jennifer Hayes and team noticed multiple teeth were found to be mobile, and the patient was diagnosed with advanced, end-stage periodontal disease. While dental disease is often associated with oral discomfort and halitosis, severe periodontal disease can also contribute to nasal signs when infection and inflammation extend beyond the oral cavity.

Pre-anesthetic diagnostics, including a CBC, chemistry panel, and electrolytes, were all within normal limits.

Dr. Jennifer Hayes performed a dental procedure and nine teeth were extracted, including teeth 104 and 204. Gingival flaps were created and closed over all extraction sites to support healing and reduce postoperative complications. The patient recovered uneventfully from anesthesia and was discharged with appropriate post-operative care instructions.

At the two-week recheck, the results were clear:

    • Sneezing had completely resolved
    • No additional episodes of epistaxis were reported
    • Extraction sites were healing well without complication
    • The patient was comfortable and doing well at home

This case serves as a great reminder that significant periodontal disease can present with clinical signs beyond the mouth. Thorough oral examinations and timely dental intervention can dramatically improve both patient comfort and quality of life.

Special thanks to the team at Bastrop, Texas, including Dr. Jennifer Hayes and Hospital Office Manager Jeannie O., for sharing this case and helping improve the lives of pets through comprehensive dental care.
