A recent case at Vetco Total Care general practice hospital involved a spayed, 1-year-old year-old Yorkshire Terrier presenting with lameness in the left hind leg. On examination, adduction of the limb provoked a clear response of pain and discomfort. Dr. Robert M. identified the source of discomfort as originating from the coxofemoral joint, leading to diagnostic imaging, including pelvic x-rays. These confirmed our doctor’s suspicion, revealing avascular necrosis of the femoral head — a classic presentation of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.
Supported by state-of-the-art imaging diagnostics, the team was able to offer advanced surgical intervention with confidence. In collaboration with the pet parent, Dr. Robert M. performed a femoral head and neck osteotomy (FHO), a procedure that involves the removal of the femoral head to prevent bone-on-bone contact, alleviating pain and restoring movement.
Dr. Robert M. also developed a customized physiotherapy program post-surgery to ensure the patient’s prompt and functional recovery. Along with the physiotherapy regimen, the patient was prescribed a five-day course of Clavamox, a five-day course of Meloxicam, and a ten-day course of Gabapentin to manage pain and inflammation. The patient’s recovery was remarkable.
