ANSWER:

a) Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
b) Ventricular septal defect (VSD)
c) Patent foramen ovale

d) Tetralogy of Fallot

Although abnormal pressures can cause the direction of blood shunting to reverse in patients with a PDA (A), VSD (B), or patent foramen ovale (C), these conditions usually cause blood to shunt from the left side of the heart to the right. Patients with Tetralogy of Fallot (D) have a right-to-left shunt that results from the presence of pulmonic stenosis, a large VSD, right ventricular hypertrophy, and overriding (dextropositioning) of the aorta. These patients can exhibit generalized cyanosis, polycythemia, weakness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.
